Ira "Gus" Overbeck

December 20, 1939 - July 24, 2020

Ira “Gus” Overbeck, 80, of Sandoval, passed away Friday, July 24, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. Gus was born December 20, 1939 in Centralia, the son of John A. Overbeck and Mary (Manhart) Overbeck. Gus married Dorothy Overbeck in 1968 and she preceded him in death on March 13, 2015. Gus is survived by his son: Dennis Overbeck and wife Debbie of Centralia; one daughter: Rhoda Newnum and special friend Steve Lusch of Centralia; four grandchildren: Jason Altenbaumer of Hoyleton, Marah Elliot and husband Mike of Germantown, Kelsey Wilson of Paducah, Ky, and Katie Overbeck and special friend Josiah Bates of Centralia; four great-grandchildren: Justice Altenbaumer, Morgan Elliot, Sawyer Elliot, and Nova Bates; one sister: Mary Speiser of Boulder; several nieces, nephews, and special friend: Betty Sullens of Patoka. Gus was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years: Dorothy Overbeck, his parents: John and Mary Overbeck, and a brother-in-law: Harold Speiser. Gus was without a doubt a true man of the outdoors. He often loved to fish, practicing his woodworking, riding his motorcycle, and target shooting. He was a member of Abate of Illinois and the NRA. Most of all, Gus enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Per Gus's wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and a private family Graveside Service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia. Extended family and friends are invited to drive through Hillcrest Memorial Park to pay their respects to Gus and his family from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospital or the Diamond Springs Baptist Church and will be accepted by the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street in Centralia, Illinois 62801 (618) 532-3523, who is honored to be of service to the Overbeck family.
