Viola Starr

Viola M. Starr, 93, of Centralia, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. She was born July 21, 1921 in Kingston, IL daughter of Charles Dark and Sarah “Sadie Ann” (Daugherty) Dark. She married Lloyd P. Starr on January 4, 1940 in Fabius Town, MO and he preceded her in death on March 24, 1988. She is survived by nine children: Anna Miller of Quincy, IL, Kenny Starr and wife Brenda of Ashley, IL, Brenda Mitchell, Lloyd Starr, Jr., Charlie Starr, Rosemary Mathis and husband Chuck, Christina Hart and husband Dale, Carmen Thouvenin and husband Walter and John Starr all of Centralia; 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Dark of Des Moines, IA; 4 great great-grandchildren several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandsons: Eric Starr and Anthony Storey, a granddaughter: Angel Klingenberg, four brothers: Henry Dark, Lynde Dark, Charles Dark, and Dale Dark, and five sisters: Margaret Phillips, Helen Smith, Virginia Dark, Rose Ellen Keller, Annie Higgins and daughter-in-law Carol Starr. Viola was a homemaker. She was also a member of the Wamac Missionary Baptist Church and was a Sunday School Teacher. Viola collected angels and loved her cat Martie. She also liked to make quilted pillows. She had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and was always patient and kind. She never knew a stranger and was always friendly, bright, and cheery. She enjoyed having big family dinners, going to church and spending time with her church family. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends around the kitchen table. Funeral Services for Viola Starr will be held Friday, December 5, 2014 at1:00 P.M. at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Pastor David Starr officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Centralia. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wamac Missionary Baptist Church and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia, which is in charge of arrangements.
