Paul E. Beaty

Paul E. Beaty, 86, of Centralia died at 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at St. Louis University Hospital, Mo. He was born August 12, 1928 in Taylorville, IL., son of Rev. Emery Beaty and Marie (Chesterman) Beaty. He married Judy Cantrell Smith in Paducah, KY on February 2, 1998. In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by one daughter, Kathy Weinberg and husband Tom of Fairhope, AL; a son, Greg Beaty and wife Kim of Centralia, IL; one stepson, Sean Smith and wife Rebecca of Sammamish, WA; seven grandchildren, Zack Beaty, Ame Church, Holly Day, Cain Weinberg, Jake Weinberg, Nick and Jennifer Weinberg; two step-grandchildren, Tristan and Helene Smith; two sisters, Louise Smock of Lincoln, IL., Evelyn Gregory and husband Bill of Lebanon, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepdaughter, Aimee Smith and a brother-in-law, Bill Smock. Mr. Beaty served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean Conflict. He held a three-sport career at McKendree College and was inducted into the schools Hall of Fame on October 1999. He was a coach at Centralia High School for Basketball and Football, leaving to enter into a teaching career at Kaskaskia College from where he retired with a Masters in Psychology. A love of creating with his hands and a general knowledge of carpentry lead him to creating and building his unusual three level home at Lake Centralia using reclaimed materials. For the most part, Beaty constructed the entire home himself, receiving advice and some help with wiring from friends and family, he went on to build a rustic barn shaped workshop and storage building. A celebration of life service for Paul E. Beaty will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 4:00p.m. with a visitation being held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Military rites will be accorded at the funeral home with the American Legion Post 446 and V.F.W. Post 2055. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Paul’s name to the First United Methodist Church in Centralia or the Paralyzed Veterans Fund and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia, which is assisting the family with arrangements.
