Charles Mundell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Mundell on Monday, June 15, 2026, in Centralia, Illinois. Born on March 20, 1928, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Charles is the son of Emil V. Mundell and Ida May (Hamrick) Mundell. On August 18, 1950 he married Norma Hardy in Terre Haute, Indiana and she preceded him in death on October 26, 2021. Charles is lovingly remembered by his devoted children: sons Dan Mundell and wife Marlene of Kenosha, WI, and Don Mundell and wife Grace of Owensboro, KY, as well as his daughter Debbie Mitchell and husband David of Centralia. He is also survived by his with six cherished grandchildren, Nathan Mundell and wife Leigh of St. Louis, MO, Nicholas Mundell of Owensboro, KY, Jen Manthey and husband Tim of Minneapolis, MN Joe Mundell and wife Anne from Lutsen, MN, Jason Mitchell and wife Maggie of Edwardsville, Illinois and Erin Mitchell-Borries of Centralia; twelve great-grandchildren, Adelide, Henry and Kashala Manthey, Ezme and Beatrice Mundell, Willow and Isaac Mundell, Juniper and Brooks Mundell, Cora and Robin Mitchell, Raya Borries and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Norma Mundell; parents: Emil and Ida May Mundell; grandsons Ryan and Justin Mundell; a grandson-in-law, Dustin Borries, four brothers: Dale Mundell, Earl Mundell, Joe Mundell, Leo Mundell, and his sister: Melba Berry. A committed educator, Charles proudly imparted knowledge as a teacher at Kaskaskia until his retirement in 1996. His dedication to youth went beyond the classroom as he coached basketball for 29 years. His Tennis team achieved the college National Tournament appearance in Florida and his Basketball teams achieved many National and State Basketball Tournaments. Charles was inducted into the Illinois State Sports Hall of Fame and the National Hall of Fame for his dedication. He also served on the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame Committee. Charles served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. Passionate about sports and the great outdoors, he loved baseball, golf, fishing, and had a fondness for bird feeding and watching at his lake property. He was a past member of the Centralia Tree Committee. Family and friends will gather to celebrate Charles's life on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the primary service at 1 p.m. at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home, Centralia, Illinois. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Military Honor’s will be accorded at the gravesite by the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and the Centralia VFW Post 2055.
